Support for Parents at The Kidd Clinic

Written By Miriam Kirby

Do you ever wish that you could find THE blueprint, the ultimate step-by-step parenting guide for you to follow with everything you need to know about being a great parent and raising an awesome kid? This parenting bible does not exist, and maybe that’s not such a bad thing.  Our children are all unique individuals with different strengths, interests, needs and challenges and so are we as parents.

At The Kidd Clinic, we have the privilege of working with many caring and dedicated parents of neurodivergent children seeking guidance on how to best understand their child’s needs, how to foster their development and give them opportunities to flourish, and how to support them through challenging situations.

Sometimes it’s hard to know where to start. There are so many parenting courses, books, webinars, and information we can subscribe to, and other people may have (unsolicited) ideas and opinions about how we should parent our children. Previous expectations of what parenting would be like may be challenged; traditional parenting strategies sometimes don’t seem to work for our neurodivergent children or don’t sit well with our parenting style and values. Often this requires a significant shift in our parenting mindset and the way we view and interpret our child’s observable behaviours.

Parents often present for help when their child is in distress or not coping; understandably, they typically feel stressed themselves and may be experiencing their own physical or mental health challenges. We get that this makes it even harder to have the head space, energy, and personal coping resources to seek help and implement strategies.

In recognition of this, The Kidd Clinic offer a range of services for parents designed to provide guidance, build your capacity, and bolster your confidence to customise your own parenting style.

Problem Solving Sessions

As the title suggests, these are one-off sessions where we work together to problem solve one or two difficulties you may be having and give suggestions and guidance around other services and supports that might assist you.

Where to next?

An autism diagnostic assessment and confirmation that your child is autistic brings with it a plethora of options and recommendations for services and supports. This can be quite overwhelming to navigate on your own. We offer a dedicated session for parents to help explore and map out a plan that is individualised to suit your child and family needs.

Parenting Support Sessions

Over a series of sessions, we work together to understand your child’s presentation and to identify and implement parenting strategies to support your child or young person. As a neurodiversity-affirming clinic, our approaches to parenting are influenced by low arousal or low demand approaches for supporting regulation, drawing upon the work of leaders in the field such as Mona Delahooke, Dr Dan Siegal, and Dr Ross Greene.

Mental Health Support

For parents who are experiencing significant parental stress or mental health concerns such as anxiety or depression, we offer individual treatment sessions with experienced mental health clinicians.

If you are seeking support and interested in accessing any of these services, please contact our lovely Client Care Team.
